Boys Lacrosse Camps

4th quarter. Tie score. 12 seconds left in the game. Driving rain. So cold you can see your breath. You can feel the mud caked on your face. You’ve just got the ball back at midfield. Their best long-stick is between you and the goal, and you can still feel the sting of his last check on your elbow. You watch the ref raise the whistle to his lips.

12 seconds left and you're wet, tired and hurt, and their best player is standing in front of you with fire in his eyes and you've got the ball in your stick and it's no secret that you're taking him to the cage; and you wouldn't have it any other way.

Everything you've ever done has prepared you for this moment. Every shot, pass, check, goal, assist; all the practices and camps and scrimmages and games; all the wall-ball and time spent alone shooting, chasing down missed shots and shooting again. All of it. All of it has led to this moment, on this field, for these 12 seconds. And you're ready because you've done all you can to be ready. It's what you live for, play for, train for. It's your dream and your passion. And the secret you possess as you stare down your opponent, the 6-ft. piece of titanium seemingly alive in his hands, is that the fire that burns in your eyes is brighter than the fire that burns in his. The whistle sounds, and the world explodes...

Selecting the Right Camp

We get lots of questions about the difference between all the various camps that we offer. This should help break it down a little: The Full-Field Lacrosse Camps are designed to offer the best balance of full-field play and individual play. They're designed for the player who is looking for both individual training and team concepts. The Full-Field Camp offers the best balance between skills stations and full-field games. The Extreme, Run & Gun, and Pro Camps are designed to concentrate exclusively on individual, one-on-one positional play. There are very few full-field games at the Extreme, Run & Gun or Pro camps. The IronMan session and Power Shooting Camps are situational specialty camps designed to cover dodging, shooting, goaltending, and defense transitional play. All of our camps end the day with our trademark IronMan games, which are short-field, fast-paced 6-V-6 games designed to improve quickness and decision-making. So, though there might not be full-field games at some of our camps, all of our camps end the day with some sort of game-like activity. Our camps all work well on their own, but are also conveniently scheduled to run back-to-back so that a player can easily attend more than one camp and stay for up to two weeks. And yes, players attending different camps during the same session may room together.

A Note About Goalies:

No position is more poorly coached overall than lacrosse goalie. There just aren’t enough quality coaches to go around. Often a team’s approach to managing a goalie is to give him a goalie stick and chest protector and then throw him in the goal. Often the goalie stands in the crease and watches while every other position on the field gets coached. Lacrosse goalie is a demanding position that demands comprehensive, position specific coaching, and that’s where we come in. Goalies are important to us at Player's Choice and we take a lot of pride in being able to offer some of the finest goalie programs in the country.

Camp Descriptions

Boy's Session 1: Pro Session (July 25-28, 2011)

Player’s Choice Paul Rabil Pro Offense Camp ($625 board, $495 day)
Current Boston Cannon midfielder, 2009 MLL Offensive MVP and MLL League MVP, 2010 Team USA midfielder (where he won a gold medal, was selected to the All-World Team, and was named the 2010 World Championship MVP), and John’s Hopkins All-American Paul Rabil, one of the most lethal scorers in the game today, will be at the helm of our Player’s Choice Pro Offense Camp. Paul, who played in three National Championship games and won two of them at John’s Hopkins, was a Tewaaraton Trophy finalist (which goes to the best lacrosse player in college lacrosse) in 2008 after scoring 50 points and leading the Blue Jays to a third NCAA Final-Four appearance in four years. He was a four-time All-American at Hopkins and led the team in scoring his sophomore, junior, and senior years; and won the prestigious McLaughlin Award in 2007 as the nation’s top midfielder. He finished his career at Hopkins as the all-time leader in goals and points for a midfielder, and is the all-time Hopkins’ career leader in goals, assists, and points in NCAA tournament games. Paul and his Pro Offense staff will break down the art and science of scoring goals and will work with all of our Pro Camp players to make them more capable scorers and feeders. In an intense setting, Paul and his staff will cover in detail some of the most important principles in offensive play, such as dodging, shooting, feeding, reading the field, working with teammates, quickness, stick protection, pick play, stealth, and more. At certain points of the day our attackmen and middies will come together with our Pro defensemen for 1-V-1’s and 2-V-2’s, and with our Pro goalies for shooting drills. In the evening everyone will compete in our IronMan games (short-field, 6-V-6 games). This is a unique opportunity to work with one of the premier offensive players in lacrosse today! (Ages: Boys, 13-18)

Player’s Choice Brodie Merrill Pro Defense Camp ($625 board, $495 day)
Former Georgetown All-American, current Toronto National (MLL), Portland Lumberjax defender (NLL), and 2010 Team Canada defenseman, where he was selected to his second All-World Team and was named for the second time as the World Championship Defensive MVP, Brodie Merrill will be in charge of our Pro Defense Camp for the fourth year. Brodie returns to PCLAX as one of the most talked about and respected players in lacrosse today. He helped lead Team Canada to a gold medal in the World Championships in 2006 where he also earned Best Defenseman honors. He was the MLL Rookie-of-the-Year and was the first player taken in the NLL draft by Portland, where he was also named NLL Defensive Player-of-the-Year, NLL Rookie-of-the-Year, and First Team All-Pro. Brodie, who has been an MLL All-Star every year he’s been in the league, and who is a 5-time MLL Defensive MVP, helped the Rattlers win a Championship in 2008, and spearheaded the defense for the 2009 MLL Champion Toronto Nationals. Brodie and his Pro Defense staff will concentrate on both the stopping aspects of defensive play, as well as those offensive skills necessary in handling the ball after a successful stop has been made. In the evening our Pro defensemen and Long-stick middies will join our other Pro Camps for a series of IronMan games (short-field, 6-V-6 games). This program is designed for both experienced close defensemen and long-stick middies. (Ages: Boys, 13-18)

Player’s Choice Brett Queener Pro Goalie Camp ($625 board, $495 day)
In his first game at the University of Albany, after making a successful save, current Toronto Nationals goalie Brett Queener ran the ball the length of the field and scored a goal against opponent Johns Hopkins. While at Albany, whom he led to the 2008 NCAA Tournament, Queener would stand between the pipes for most of the game, but would come out in man-up situations, switch his goalie stick for an attack stick, and play as part of one of the best man-up units in the country. A late round draft pick in 2008, Queener would go on to lead the Nationals to an MLL Championship and would be recognized by Inside Lacrosse Magazine as Lacrosse Personality of the Year. He was also the Freestyle Shooting Champion at that year’s MLL All-Star Weekend. The All-Star goalie, who also plays in the NLL for the Boston Cannons as an offensive player, is truly one of the most colorful and versatile players in all of lacrosse, and the perfect choice to direct our Player’s Choice Pro Goalie Camp. Brett and his Pro Goalie Staff will put our Pro Camp goalies through the paces in an intensive three-day program covering in detail all aspects of goaltending, including: positioning, footwork, reading the play, surface play, playing the pipe, leading the break, improving quickness, quarterbacking the defense, communicating effectively, and more. Our Pro Camp goalies will face lots of shots and will come together with our Pro defensemen, attackmen, and middies for 1-V-1’s, 2-V-2’s, shooting stations, and more. In the evening they’ll compete in our IronMan games (short-field, 6-V-6 games). This is a chance to work one-on-one with one of the most charismatic and talented players in the game today! (Ages: Boys, 13-18)

Boy's Session 2: IronMan Session (July 28-31, 2011)

Player’s Choice Chris Surran Video Goalie Camp ($625 board, $495 day)
Syracuse All-American and NCAA Championship MVP Chris Surran will be at the helm of the Player’s Choice Video Goalie Camp. Chris, who played in two consecutive NCAA National Championship games while at Syracuse, and who currently coaches at the Jesuit School in Dallas, Texas, founded the goalie program at Player’s Choice and is one of the finest coaches in the game today.  The Chris Surran Video Goalie Camp is designed for those goalies who really want to examine their game and break it down as much as possible. All of our Video goalies will be videotaped in the cage facing all sorts of shots.  Chris and his staff will then study each recording with the goalie being recorded and will critique as much of their game as possible, highlighting both strengths and weaknesses. Our IronMan Video Goalie staff will then work with each goalie on their specific trouble spots. In the afternoon and evening our goalies will face-off against our Dodging & Shooting Camp middies and attackmen, and we’ll finish the day with our IronMan games (sort-field, 6-V-6 games) including our all-goalie IronMan teams! Each goalie will be given a DVD of their video sessions to take home with them. (Ages: Boys, 13-18)

Player's Choice Kyle Hartzell One-On-One Defense &Transition Camp
($625 board, $495 day)
Current Chesapeake Bayhawk defenseman, Kyle Hartzell, a former All-American defenseman and two-time NCAA National Championship winner at Salisbury State University, brings his expertise to our most unique defense camp: the One-On-One Defense & Transition Camp. Hartzell, who has risen through the pro ranks to become one of the most capable and versatile defensemen in the MLL, and his One-On-One Defense & Transition staff will concentrate on two important aspects of lacrosse: effective one-on-one defense against a dodging middie or attackman, and offensively handling the ball after the strip and running the clear and/or fast-break/slow-break. This is an intense camp designed for close defensemen and long-stick middies and is an excellent opportunity for anyone who plays with a long-pole to improve his positioning, foot-work, stick-checks, timing and overall stick skills. In the afternoons our One-On-One defensemen and LSM’s will integrate with our Dodging & Shooting camp for a series of one-on-one’s, two-on-two’s, and fast-break/slow-break drills. We’ll finish the day with our IronMan games (short-field, 6-V-6 games). This is a great chance to focus on two very important parts of the defensive game, and to work with a defenseman who, week-in and week-out, is forced to take on the best offensive players in the world. (Ages: Boys, 13-18)

Player's Choice Michael Kimmel and Steven Boyle Dodging & Shooting Camp
($625 board, $495 day)
All-American midfielder Michael Kimmel, and All-American attackman Steven Boyle, both four-year starters and NCAA champions at John’s Hopkins University, will co-direct our dodging and shooting camp.  Kimmel, an MLL All-Star middie for the Chesapeake Bayhawks, and Boyle, who plays for the MLL’s Boston Cannons, and their Dodging & Shooting staff will focus on effective dodging from all points (out front, wings, and X), with the emphasis placed on execution, technique, and timing; and on shooting on the run.  Our Dodging & Shooting middies and attackmen will integrate in the afternoons and evenings with our One-On-One defensemen and Video Camp goalies for a series of one-on-ones, two-on-twos, and shooting drills.  We’ll finish the day with our IronMan games (short-field, 6-V-6 games).  This is a great opportunity to hone your offensive skills and to work up close with two of the most exciting players in lacrosse today! Player’s Choice Matt Abbott Extreme Midfield Camp ($625 board, $495 day)
Syracuse All-American middie and two-time NCAA Champion Matt Abbott returns to Player’s Choice as one of the most versatile, unselfish and dependable players in all of lacrosse. Man-up, man-down, D-middie, clearing situations, face-offs, it doesn’t matter. Matt Abbott is the go-to guy. A Tewaaraton Trophy and Lowes Senior CLASS Award Finalist, and member of the 2009 NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team, Matt was a team captain in 2009 and led the team in ground balls with 77 gbs. His hat trick against Virginia in the 2008 Championship Semi-Final game helped the Orangemen come from behind to win in one of the most memorable NCAA Tournament games of all time, and his assist in the final seconds of the 2009 NCAA Championship game helped tie a game that is generally regarded as the greatest NCAA Championship game ever played. These days Matt plays midfield for the MLL’s Washington Bayhawks. The Extreme Midfield Camp is an intensive program designed to focus on the three most vital aspects of midfield play: offense, open-field defense, and transition. Matt and his Extreme Middie staff will focus on both position fundamentals and situational concepts. In the afternoon our middies will join our Extreme Defense, Attack, and Goalie Camps for a series of integrated drills and in the evening will compete in our Extreme IronMan games (short-field, 6-V-6 games). This is a great chance to work one-on-one with one of the hardest working and most resourceful players in the world today! (Ages: Boys, 13-18)

Player’s Choice Doc Schneider Extreme Goalie Camp ($625 board, $495 day)
Current University of Massachusetts coach and 2009 UMass All-American goalie Doc Schneider will be at the helm of our Boy’s Extreme Goalie Camp for 2010. Doc had an impressive career at UMass leading the Minutemen to the National Championship game as a freshman. He was a 2009 Tewaaraton Award finalist which goes to the most outstanding player in NCAA lacrosse and he finished his career at UMass with a .753 save percentage, second only to former PCLAX goalie coach Sal Locasio who holds the all-time NCAA record, and was the 2009 UMass Athlete Of The Year. Doc, who now coaches at UMass, is the kind of goalie we love at Player’s Choice: loud, quick, enthusiastic, unselfish, and a real leader. Doc and his staff will focus on all aspects of goaltending in this position intensive program designed for experienced goalies looking to take their game to the next level. In the evening our Extreme goalies will join our other Extreme Camps for a series of IronMan games (short-field, 6-V-6 games). Boy's Session 4: Full-Field Session (Aug 3-6, 2011)

Player’s Choice Boy’s Full-Field Team & Skills Lacrosse Camp ($625 board, $495 day)
This is the camp that has it all. If you're looking for the best balance of game play and individual play, then the Player’s Choice Boy’s Full-Field Lacrosse Camp is the way to go. We've considered calling this camp our "team" camp, but we thought that it might lead one to think that it was just games and scrimmages and that would be inaccurate. The Player’s Choice Boy’s Full-Field Team & Skills Camp is designed to cover as much of the game of lacrosse as possible. It's designed to focus on both individual skills and team concepts. It's designed for players who feel that they need to focus on all aspects of lacrosse. It's designed for players who might not have the opportunity to play a lot of lacrosse over the summer and need something that is going to give them a little bit of everything. It's designed for players who feel that full-field play is an important aspect to any program that they participate in. Lacrosse is a team sport and much of this camp is dedicated to those things that make a team successful, and those parts of the game that require a group of people to perform together to accomplish a like goal. The morning is dedicated to individual play. Our station sessions allow us to focus on four or five different topics each day, and by position. Stations might include shooting on the run, take-away checks, face-offs, dodging from the wing, and ground balls. The emphasis in the afternoon is on team play and team dynamics. Afternoon topics might include fast-breaks, extra-man offense, unsettled team play, clears and rides, and team defense. Our team session is followed by team practices and the first games of the day (each player competes on a team while the camp is in session). In the evening we play more games and finish the day with IronMan Lacrosse (short-field, 6-v-6 games). (Ages: Boys, 13-18)

Player’s Choice Boy’s Kip Turner Full-Field Goalie Camp ($625 board, $495 day)
2011 will be Kip Turner’s fourth season with Player’s Choice and the third season that he’ll serve as a position director. As an All-American and All-ACC goalie at Virginia, Kip led the Cavaliers to a National Championship in 2006 and was selected as the team’s defensive MVP. He ranks first in Virginia Lacrosse history with a 7.12 goals allowed average. Kip is a current member and starting goalie of the MLL’s Boston Cannons and was the second pick overall in the 2007 Collegiate Draft, tying him for the highest picked goalie in league history. Kip led the Cannons to MLL Semi-Finals in 2009 and 2010. Turner and his Full-Field Goalie staff will put our goalies through the paces in an intensive three-day program covering in detail all aspects of goaltending, including: positioning, footwork, reading the play, surface play, playing the pipe, leading the break, improving quickness, quarterbacking the defense, communicating effectively, and more. Our Full-Field goalies will face lots of shots and will come together with our Full-Field defensemen, attackmen, and middies for 1-V-1’s, 2-V-2’s, shooting stations, and more. In the evening they’ll compete in our Full-Field games and IronMan competition (short-field, 6-V-6 games). This is a chance to work one-on-one with a goalie who has performed at the highest level of the game, has faced some of the best shooters in lacrosse history, and is still standing between the pipes at the professional level today. (Ages: Boys, 13-18)

Player’s Choice Dave Evans Power Shooting & Strength Camp ($625 board, $495 day)
Former Boston Cannon attackman/middie, and former Brown University All-American Dave Evans is one of the game’s all-time great shooters. Dave, who has been terrorizing goalies for years with one of the hardest shots ever seen, and who is the former record holder for the fastest shot in the MLL at 109 MPH, will be on hand for one of the most unique camps in the country. The Power Shooting & Strength Camp is designed for those who really know what they want: a faster, more powerful, and more accurate shot. The concept is simple: to cover all aspects of shooting the ball and to break down the mechanics of shooting, emphasizing quickness, shot power, and placement. Our shooters will shoot until it hurts, working on aim, baiting & deception, shot speed, ground use, body positioning, shooting from a stationary position, shooting on the run, shooting out of the dodge, handling the feed (both good and bad), and shooting from difficult angles. Other topics covered will include anaerobic shooting & conditioning; cardiovascular shot training, and muscle memory shot training. Our shooters will shoot all day and in the evening will compete in our IronMan games (short-field, 6-V-6 games). This is a great opportunity to work towards a faster and more accurate shot, and to gain an understanding of what you need to do to keep improving as a shooter. (Ages: Boys 13-18)

Player's Choice Matt Poskay Run & Gun Middie Camp ($625 board, $495 day)
Former Virginia All-American, NCAA Champion, and current Boston Cannon midfielder Matt Poskay will work close-up with our middies at our Player’s Choice Run & Gun Middie Camp.  Poskay, who played on one of the most exciting midfield lines in NCAA history while at Virginia, and who was selected as the 2010 MLL Offensive MVP, will add his own personal touch and cover those aspects of midfield play that he feels are most important.  Matt and his staff of MLL middies and college stars will break down a wide-range of topics, focusing on both offensive middie play and both short-stick, and long-stick middie defense.  In the evenings we’ll join our Full-Field and Power Shooting Camps for our IronMan games (short-field, 6-V-6 games).  Here’s a chance to learn from the player chosen in 2010 as the most lethal scorer in the MLL! (Ages: Boys 13-18)

PCLAX announces a new, special U-11 division for the Matt Poskay Run & Gun Middie Camp, Aug 3-6, 2011. This camp is designed for experienced 9, 10 & 11 year-olds and will focus on all aspects of midfield play. Our U-11 campers will be housed in a separate area of the dorm with extra supervision, and will fully participate in all aspects of the camp.
