Boys Lacrosse Camps

4th quarter. Tie score. 12 seconds left in the game. Driving rain. So cold you can see your breath. You can feel the mud caked on your face. You’ve just got the ball back at midfield. Their best long-stick is between you and the goal, and you can still feel the sting of his last check on your elbow. You watch the ref raise the whistle to his lips.

12 seconds left and you're wet, tired and hurt, and their best player is standing in front of you with fire in his eyes and you've got the ball in your stick and it's no secret that you're taking him to the cage; and you wouldn't have it any other way.

Everything you've ever done has prepared you for this moment. Every shot, pass, check, goal, assist; all the practices and camps and scrimmages and games; all the wall-ball and time spent alone shooting, chasing down missed shots and shooting again. All of it. All of it has led to this moment, on this field, for these 12 seconds. And you're ready because you've done all you can to be ready. It's what you live for, play for, train for. It's your dream and your passion. And the secret you possess as you stare down your opponent, the 6-ft. piece of titanium seemingly alive in his hands, is that the fire that burns in your eyes is brighter than the fire that burns in his. The whistle sounds, and the world explodes...

Selecting the Right Camp

We get lots of questions about the difference between all the various camps that we offer. This should help break it down a little: The Full-Field Lacrosse Camps are designed to offer the best balance of full-field play and individual play. They're designed for the player who is looking for both individual training and team concepts. The Full-Field Camp offers the best balance between skills stations and full-field games. The Elite, Extreme, and Pro Camps are designed to concentrate exclusively on individual, one-on-one positional play. There are very few full-field games at the Elite, Extreme or Pro camps. The IronMan Camps are situational specialty camps designed to cover shooting, goaltending, and transitional play. All of our camps end the day with our trademark IronMan games, which are short-field, fast-paced 6-V-6 games designed to improve quickness and decision-making. So, though there might not be full-field games at some of our camps, all of our camps end the day with some sort of game-like activity. Our camps all work well on their own, but are also conveniently scheduled to run back-to-back so that a player can easily attend more than one camp and stay for up to two-and-a-half weeks. And yes, players attending different camps during the same session may room together.

Boy's Session 4: Full-Field Session (Aug 5-9, 2010)*

*Includes ticket to August 7 Boston Cannons’ home game and round-trip coach

Player's Choice Boy's Full-Field Team & Skills Camp
at UMass Dartmouth, North Dartmouth, MA
Aug 5-9, 2010
$625 (Overnight); $495 (day)

This is the camp that has it all. If you're looking for the best balance of game play and individual play, then the Player’s Choice Boy’s Full-Field Lacrosse Camp is the way to go. We've considered calling this camp our "team" camp, but we thought that it might lead one to think that it was just games and scrimmages and that would be inaccurate. The Player’s Choice Boy’s Full-Field Team & Skills Camp is designed to cover as much of the game of lacrosse as possible. It's designed to focus on both individual skills and team concepts. It's designed for players who feel that they need to focus on all aspects of lacrosse. It's designed for players who might not have the opportunity to play a lot of lacrosse over the summer and need something that is going to give them a little bit of everything. It's designed for players who feel that full-field play is an important aspect to any program that they participate in. Lacrosse is a team sport and much of this camp is dedicated to those things that make a team successful, and those parts of the game that require a group of people to perform together to accomplish a like goal. The morning is dedicated to individual play. Our station sessions allow us to focus on four or five different topics each day, and by position. Stations might include shooting on the run, take-away checks, face-offs, dodging from the wing, and ground balls. The emphasis in the afternoon is on team play and team dynamics. Afternoon topics might include fast-breaks, extra-man offense, unsettled team play, clears and rides, and team defense. Our team session is followed by team practices and the first games of the day (each player competes on a team while the camp is in session). In the evening we play more games and finish the day with IronMan Lacrosse (short-field, 6-v-6 games). (Ages: Boys, 13-18)

Player's Choice Boy's Full-Field Goalie Camp
at UMass Dartmouth, North Dartmouth, MA
Aug 5-9, 2010
$625 (Overnight); $495 (day)

No position is more poorly coached overall than lacrosse goalie. There just aren’t enough quality coaches to go around. Often a team’s approach to managing a goalie is to give him a goalie stick and chest protector and then throw him in the goal. Often the goalie stands in the crease and watches while every other position on the field gets coached. Lacrosse goalie is a demanding position that demands comprehensive, position specific coaching, and that’s where we come in. Goalies are important to us at Player's Choice and we take a lot of pride in being able to offer some of the finest goalie programs in the country. Former Boston Cannon Goalie and current Derryfield coach Chris Hettler and his Full-Field Goalie staff will work one-on-one with all of our goalies, covering all aspects of net-minding, including: position and posture, stick movement, surface play, outlet passing, directing the defense, defending the break, making the break, reading the field, baiting, clearing, and offensive play. Our goalies will attend creative, comprehensive training sessions in the morning, and will work with the Boy’s Full-Field Camp in the afternoon. In the evenings they’ll complete in full-field games and in our IronMan competition (short-field, 6-v-6 games). (Ages: Boys, 13-18)

Player's Choice Dave Evans Power Shooting & Strength Camp
at UMass Dartmouth, North Dartmouth, MA
Aug 5-9, 2010
$625 (Overnight); $495 (day)

Former Boston Cannon attackman/middie, and former Brown University All-American Dave Evans is one of the game’s all-time great shooters. Dave, who has been terrorizing goalies for years with one of the hardest shots ever seen, and who is the former record holder for the fastest shot in the MLL at 109 MPH, will be on hand for one of the most unique camps in the country. The Power Shooting & Strength Camp is designed for those who really know what they want: a faster, more powerful, and more accurate shot. The concept is simple: to cover all aspects of shooting the ball and to break down the mechanics of shooting, emphasizing quickness, shot power, and placement. Our shooters will shoot until it hurts, working on aim, baiting & deception, shot speed, ground use, body positioning, shooting from a stationary position, shooting on the run, shooting out of the dodge, handling the feed (both good and bad), and shooting from difficult angles. Other topics covered will include anaerobic shooting & conditioning; cardiovascular shot training, and muscle memory shot training. Our shooters will shoot all day and in the evening will compete in our IronMan games (short-field, 6-V-6 games). This is a great opportunity to work towards a faster and more accurate shot, and to gain an understanding of what you need to do to keep improving as a shooter. (Ages: Boys 13-18)

Boy's Session 5: Pro Session (Aug 9-12, 2010)

Player's Choice Paul Rabil Pro Offense Camp
at U-Mass Dartmouth, North Dartmouth, MA
Aug 9-12, 2010
$595 ('Overnight); $475 (day)

Current Boston Cannon midfielder, 2009 MLL Offensive MVP and MLL League MVP, 2010 Team USA midfielder, and John’s Hopkins All-American Paul Rabil, one of the most lethal scorers in the game today, will be at the helm of our Player’s Choice Pro Offense Camp. Paul, who played in three National Championship games and won two of them at John’s Hopkins, was a Tewaaraton Trophy finalist (which goes to the best lacrosse player in college lacrosse) in 2008 after scoring 50 points and leading the Blue Jays to a third NCAA Final-Four appearance in four years. He was a four-time All-American at Hopkins and led the team in scoring his sophomore, junior, and senior years; and won the prestigious McLaughlin Award in 2007 as the nation’s top midfielder. He finished his career at Hopkins as the all-time leader in goals and points for a midfielder, and is the all-time Hopkins’ career leader in goals, assists, and points in NCAA tournament games. Paul, who was also a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and Inside Lacrosse’s 2008 Man-Of-The-Year, was the number one draft pick in the 2008 MLL draft for the Boston Cannons and was the number two overall draft pick in the NLL draft for the San Jose Stealth. Paul and his Pro Offense staff will break down the art and science of scoring goals and will work with all of our Pro Camp players to make them more capable scorers and feeders. In an intense setting, Paul and his staff will cover in detail some of the most important principles in offensive play, such as dodging, shooting, feeding, reading the field, working with teammates, quickness, stick protection, pick play, stealth, and more. At certain points of the day our attackmen and middies will come together with our Pro defensemen for 1-V-1’s and 2-V-2’s, and with our Pro goalies for shooting drills. In the evening everyone will compete in our IronMan games (short-field, 6-V-6 games). This is a unique opportunity to work with one of the premier offensive players in lacrosse today! While at Georgetown Kyle was a 2-time ECAC Defensive Player of the Year, and ECAC Rookie Of The Year as a freshman. Kyle is also a member of the NLL’s Philadelphia Wings and was a member of the 2006 USA Men’s National Team. Kyle and his Pro Defense staff will cover in detail as much of the defensive nature of the game as possible. In an intensive program designed by Kyle himself, our players will work on defensive position, footwork, quickness, stick checks, groundballs, transition, 1-on-1’s and more. Our Pro Camp defensemen and long-stick middies will come together with our Pro Camp middies and attackmen at different points of the day for a series of integrated drills. $595 ('Overnight); $475 (day)

2010 will be Kip Turner’s third season with Player’s Choice and the second season that he’ll be at the helm of our Pro Goalie Camp. As an All-American and All-ACC goalie at Virginia, Kip led the Cavaliers to a National Championship in 2006 and was selected as the team’s defensive MVP. He ranks first in Virginia Lacrosse history with a 7.12 goals allowed average. Kip is a current member and starting goalie of the MLL’s Boston Cannons and was the second pick overall in the 2007 Collegiate Draft, tying him for the highest picked goalie in league history.
